I started kayaking when I was 10 years old.
I am now 26 so I have been doing it longer than I haven’t. It was my older brother, John who got me into kayaking. It was 2 years after he started that I decided I wanted to have a go.
I have always been competitive and this helped when it came to racing! I also have a twin brother so there was, and still is, an unwritten competitive side between us - from who learnt to ride their bikes first to who passed their driving test (I won the bike and he won the driving test!)
My brother has stopped paddling a few years ago and has joined the Submarines but there is still race on the cards and it would never be forgotten if I beat him!
I started off winning small “races to places” at my club, Elmbridge Canoe Club. This went onto going to little races abroad in France to joining the National Team by the time I was 16.
I won the Junior Marathon World Championships in 2006 at the age of 18 and then I joined the big world with the senior team. This essentially means starting from the bottom of the team, which can be quite hard if you’ve come from the top!
After finding my place in the senior women’s squad of 8, we have gone from strength to strength winning medals across the field in multiple events.
My 2014 season has ended with me winning the Women’s K1 5000m World Championships in Moscow.
We have just started our first week of training after having 4 weeks off to rest and recover. Now it’s back into the gym and getting in the kilometers on the water for a big winters training.
Next season is the time to qualify for spots for Great Britain for the Rio 2016 Olympics so no stone is left unturned!
