Fair Trade Community Project and Clean Water

Fair Trade project brings safe water to indigenous community

As a nation we tend to talk about the weather a lot and this weekend's rain was no exception.....except it got me thinking about water in our lives. At Lucy Bee, Fair Trade is one of our passions and we know that it is for you too, through our conversations with you.

What exactly does Fair Trade mean?

I think most people are aware that produce that's certified Fair Trade means a fairer reward for the small farmers but did you know that it also means a better and improved standard of living. The price premium that we (Lucy Bee) pay goes towards higher wages plus community developments. Added to this, we agree to pay a percentage of every sale (0.75%) to the Fair Trade Sustainability Alliance which allows them to do their work. So every time you buy a jar of Lucy Bee, you really are making a difference - not just to your life, but to those that have produced our wonderful oil, too.

With our first shipment of coconut oil, we contributed towards building a well for the locals, giving them access to clean water. In this area, waterborne pathogens can cause severe illnesses and are one of the leading causes of infant and small children’s deaths. Almost hard for us to imagine as we simply turn on our tap and take for granted it’s quality.

Water in our daily life

Having easy access to safe water is a life changing experience. I remember a couple of years ago when a local water main burst and we were without water for over 24 hours. Suddenly you REALLY appreciate how easy your life is by having water (literally) on tap - you realise how many times a day you wash your hands, use water in cooking, brush your teeth.....the list goes on. I found being without water for those 24+hours was far worse than having a power cut. I suppose what I'm trying to say is it's not simply "we've helped build a well" but "this has made a HUGE improvement to real people in their everyday living"

We're really proud to have the Fair Trade certification on our label and a heartfelt thanks to you for supporting us in supporting the coconut oil community in  Mindanao .
