Coconut oil as a beauty product, really? Yes definitely!

For centuries, coconut oil has been used to keep skin soft, supple and well-hydrated. In fact, the fatty acids found in coconut oil mean it can be a brilliantly effective (and purse-friendly!) lip balm or night cream, particularly for anyone who suffers from dry skin or skin conditions.
We also love using it as a body moisturiser, particularly after bathing as this helps to lock the moisture in. As well as the fact that the vitamin E in coconut oil it will hydrate and nourish any tricky patches (scaly, dry legs, be gone!), you’ll also smell utterly delicious and totally tropical.
Many studies have shown that coconut oil can effectively treat mild skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, by boosting the moisture and lipid content of the skin.
To feel the full benefits, we recommend that you include it both in your diet and also apply it directly to the skin, whenever needed.
We now know that all too many of our facial products and make-up removers are loaded with junk and chemicals, yet we keep on coming back to them for more. Why, when we can turn to nature’s own beauty products, including organic coconut oil?
You’ve probably heard of using olive oil to remove make-up before but you can use coconut oil in exactly the same way. Not only is it gentle, making it ideal for sensitive skin but it can also leave the face looking radiant, fresh and silky smooth to the touch.
Coconut oil is particularly good at removing make-up around delicate areas, such as the eyes (you’d be amazed at how good it is at removing stubborn waterproof mascara!). Many people use coconut oil for something called “oil pulling”, which has been practised for thousands of years as an Indian folk remedy. Oil pulling basically involves swilling a teaspoon or tablespoon of oil around your mouth for 5 to 20 minutes, then spitting the oil out.
Traditionally, Indians use oils such as sesame and vegetable to do this, however coconut oil is a brilliant substitute (just remember to dispose of it in the bin as it might block the drains!).
While we would never recommend that you protect your skin with coconut oil alone, with its low SPF of around 4, one of the oldest and most traditional uses for the oil is as a natural sunscreen.
Dr Bruce Fife said: “One of the oldest uses for coconut oil is as a sun screen / suntan lotion. Islanders have been using coconut oil for this purpose for thousands of years.
“In the tropics where the climate is hot, islanders traditionally wore little clothing so that they could keep themselves cool. To protect themselves from the burning rays of the hot tropical sun they applied a thin layer of coconut oil over their entire body. This would protect them from sunburn, improve skin tone and help keep annoying insects away.”

For this reason, it can, also, be effective in treating dandruff.
